What is Gold Investing?

Gold investing refers to buying gold, either in the physical form of coins and bullion bars or via financial instruments including loan note funding, stocks or futures contracts.

While there are many reasons to invest in gold, the primary objective is typically wealth preservation achieved through portfolio diversification.

Despite the global economy transitioning away from using the gold standard, the precious metal maintains intrinsic value due to its rarity and historical significance. Consequently, gold acts as an effective hedge against inflation compared to fiat currencies, which are susceptible to the volatility of the global market.

Types of Gold Investment

There are a number of reasons to invest in gold. In times of economic uncertainty, investors often turn to gold for its tangible value. Similarly, geopolitical conflicts can affect global stability by disrupting trade, markets and regional debt.  Fiat currencies can lose purchasing power over time. Stocks and bonds suffer during economic downturns. Gold, on the other hand, maintains its intrinsic, universal value, and can help cushion a portfolio through economic crises.

Gold can come in many forms, from unrefined nuggets to handcrafted jewellery. When it comes to investing, the most popular gold comes in the form of coins and bullion bars. Gold coins, which are primarily regarded as collectibles rather than legal tender, range in size, weight, design and purity, and remain of interest to investors due to their tax efficiency and liquidity. Bullion bars, on the other hand, are valued solely on their gold content, and are predominately known as pure gold, with bars being made from solid 24 karat gold.

An alternative to physical gold investment are gold-backed investment bonds. These are a type of fixed-rate loan with value tied to physical gold, and can be issued by governments, financial institutions, or private companies. These investments provide predictable cash flow through predetermined, fixed interest rates, ensuring a reliable income stream. This type of investment is popular as the responsibility of the gold reserve security lies with the issuer, who guarantee safekeeping of gold in professional vaults, and means that individuals can gain exposure to the gold market and its inflation-hedging properties without the need to physically transport or handle the metal.1

The Stability of Gold Investment

Gold can be a much needed balance in an investor’s portfolio. Due to the volatile nature of investing, gold facilitates an effective distribution of risk through strategic diversification. Gold markets often move independently from stocks and bonds, meaning that while global market fluctuations or systemic collapses may adversely impact an investor's holdings, the presence of gold ensures that the remaining portfolio is not equally compromised.2

Like any investment venture, there are some general risks surrounding physical gold investment, including interest rate sensitivity or short-term price stagnation. However, gold has a proven legacy of stable and reliable margin returns over long periods of time. As a physical commodity in a digital age, it offers tangible security, reducing risk through inflation or market fluctuations.

When you own gold, it's not attached to the debt of somebody else like a bond is or an equity where the performance of a company will drive performance.

As for gold-backed investment bonds, there are also some risks to consider. Short-term fluctuations, limited liquidity, currency exchange rates and issuer credibility are of primary concern. Despite agreed contracts, investors are still susceptible to these risks, and must take them into consideration when deciding what form of investment is most suitable for them.

Gold Pricing

As with any natural commodity, the valuation of gold is primarily determined by the principles of supply and demand. Given that gold is a finite resource, its price volatility is significantly more responsive to shifts in market demand than to variations in production output.

This does not mean that production does not affect pricing at all. With new, advanced proprietary technology designed to accurately identify gold reserves and isolate high-density deposits, miners are able to maximise extraction efficiency while substantially reducing operational waste. Conversely, regulatory constraints, environmental regulations and increased extraction costs can significantly reduce mining operations.3
